Pregnant Kerrigan puts skating on ice

Stoneham skating sweetheart Nancy Kerrigan has cancelled all her events and shows for the 2004-2005 season because she is pregnant with her second child.

Kerrigan, who has had five miscarriages since delivering her 8-year-old son, Matthew, has been advised by her doctors not to tour. She is 14 weeks pregnant and due in the spring.

``Skating is not really an issue,'' Kerrigan told the Track. ``I skated when I was 7 1/2 months pregnant with Matthew. But it's been a roller-coaster of emotions every time I've gotten pregnant, so we want to be on the safe side.''

The 1998 Olympic silver medalist, who turned 35 yesterday, said she and her husband, sports promoter Jerry Solomon, have been trying to have another child since Matthew was a year old. Doctors cannot come up with a reason why her last five pregnancies have ended in miscarriages.

``They tested me, they tested Jerry, they even tested one of the fetuses but they cannot find a reason,'' she said. ``They say it's nothing I've done. Not lifting or falling - my body is used to falling anyway, and it takes a lot more than that to miscarry. Something's just not lining up right.''

But the 1998 silver medalist is optimistic she'll carry this baby to term because she has made it past the magical 3-month mark when most miscarriages occur.

``We waited to tell Matt and he's so excited and thrilled - crazily excited,'' she said.

Her son told her he'd like to have a sister to ``even things out,'' Kerrigan said. ``There's him and Clay, (Solomon's son by a previous marriage) and Jerry and just me for the girl,'' she said.

Kerrigan said she doesn't think the break will become a permanent retirement from skating.

``If something interesting and fun comes up, I'll do it,'' she said. ``Like if I got the chance to do `Footloose on Ice' again, I'd do it in a second.''

For now, Kerrigan has opted out of next month's ``Ice Wars'' show in South Carolina and the national tour of ``Broadway on Ice,'' 40 shows in three months.

However, Kerrigan will continue to promoter her ``Halloween on Ice'' DVD and ``Easter Egg Escapade,'' an animated film that features her voice.
